The
magazine I analysed was New Musical Express, commonly known as NME. This is a institutional aspect, according to the
LIAR concepts. The NME logo is recognisable,
therefore can be immediately seen and understood by the target audience. The logo also adds to the language aspect of LIAR, as the
colours and size of the font used makes it the dominant feature on the front
cover, as it stands out and straight away catches the attention of the reader.
The font on the whole of the front cover, in fact, is all bold and a
contrasting colour to the background making it clearly noticed.
The colours used are mainly white, yellow and red; all bright colours which is in fact the colours used on the contents page so this could be considered as a house colour. However, whilst looking through the remainder of the magazine the house colours seem to be black and blue, with elements of red.
The strap line of the front cover states 'NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS' which is the full meaning to the abbreviation of NME. NME is known as the masthead as it is the main title of the article.
The main image is of Joy Division, which is celebrity endorsement and also anchorage as he is the main feature within the article, we can tell this as it is the main cover line. The image used has no direct mode of address this is a feature used to attract the target audience to purchase the magazine. The image is also in black and white this is effective as it makes the text stand out but it also creates a mysterious approach to the magazine, making the reader want to read. 'WORLD EXCLUSIVE' is a tag phrase as it interests the audience into reading the article.
The right third of the front page contains the puffs. The typography is still bold and capitalised showing that they are also key features within the article. A freebie is offered at the top left-hand side of the article, this is known as a plug and is placed there to catch the readers eye.
In the left hand corner. There is a barcode, this is an institutional aspect as it shows the magazine is sold, it also has foreign currency which shows it is sold abroad. The website also adds to the institutional LIAR concept as this shows the audience is allowed to contact them. The date states the 15th of September 2012, this shows that the magazine is published weekly as the specific date is specified.
Audience is another of the LIAR aspects, NME has made a reader profile to show us their target market, this allows them to understand their readers. It is also used for advertising, this makes the money for the industry and covers many costs.

The impression portrayed through this front cover is that the genre of the magazine is indie rock subculture. This is shown through the black and white image giving the front cover a indie vide and the colours used to convey rebellion.
