audience feedback on proposed free download

My free download is the song 'Gettin' over you- David Guetta'
My audience immediately recognised the song to be by David Guetta, a well known DJ who is famous for his great music.
They said that the genre of the song was pop/club but they also associated the song to festivals as he recently played this at V Festival 2012 aswell as other places where he has made appearances.

Planning

I created my mood board on collage creator, as this allowed me to create borders around my images giving it a photographic effect. As my music magazine is going to be based on festivals, a variety of genres had to be portrayed therefore I have selected images of different artists to show this.

Research- textual analysis of NME music magazine

The magazine I analysed was New Musical Express, commonly known as NME. This is a institutional aspect, according to the LIAR concepts. The NME logo is recognisable, therefore can be immediately seen and understood by the target audience. The logo also adds to the language aspect of LIAR, as the colours and size of the font used makes it the dominant feature on the front cover, as it stands out and straight away catches the attention of the reader. The font on the whole of the front cover, in fact, is all bold and a contrasting colour to the background making it clearly noticed.
The colours used are mainly white, yellow and red; all bright colours which is in fact the colours used on the contents page so this could be considered as a house colour. However, whilst looking through the remainder of the magazine the house colours seem to be black and blue, with elements of red.

The strap line of the front cover states 'NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS' which is the full meaning to the abbreviation of NME. NME is known as the masthead as it is the main title of the article.

The main image is of Joy Division, which is celebrity endorsement and also anchorage as he is the main feature within the article, we can tell this as it is the main cover line. The image used has no direct mode of address this is a feature used to attract the
target audience to purchase the magazine. The image is also in black and white this is effective as it makes the text stand out but it also creates a mysterious approach to the magazine, making the reader want to read. 'WORLD EXCLUSIVE' is a tag phrase as it interests the audience into reading the article.

The right third of the front page contains the puffs. The typography is still bold and capitalised showing that they are also key features within the article. A freebie is offered at the top left-hand side of the article, this is known as a plug and is placed there to catch the
readers eye.

In the left hand corner. There is a barcode, this is an institutional aspect as it shows the magazine is sold, it also has foreign currency which shows it is sold abroad. The website also adds to the institutional LIAR concept as this shows the audience is allowed to contact them. The date states the 15th of September 2012, this shows that the magazine is published weekly as the specific date is specified.

Audience is another of the LIAR aspects, NME has made a reader profile to show us their target market, this allows them to understand their readers. It is also used for advertising, this makes the money for the industry and covers many costs.

The impression portrayed through this front cover is that the genre of the magazine is indie rock subculture. This is shown through the black and white image giving the front cover a indie vide and the colours used to convey rebellion.

Research- textual analysis of double page spread

Double page spread of NME magazine.

On this double page spread, the main feature is the main image dominating the majority of the page, this connotes that the article is focused on the artist (of whom is Lily Allen). A medium close up shot has been used in order for her facial expression to be identifed. The artist is using direct mode of address which would engage with the audience. Her makeup and hair indicate a indie rock/punk genre, as it gives a spikey outcome denoting the punk image. The clothes she is wearing is stereotypical of this genre. However, the reader receives a positive representation of Lily Allen as she portrays a confident front, which may be considered as anchorage to the headline.

The main headline also connotes this genre, as the format of the cut out words convey a rock vibe and denote rebellion, which also relates to the genre.  The cut out words also, in a way, shows her confidence as it shows the artist is not afraid to be different. The headline is a pulled quote of Lily Allen interview spoke about in the main body text below. It has been used to engage the interest of the reader. The context of the pulled quote is quite interesting as the image suggests that she is an 'attention seeker' due to her confidence, and body language, however she denies that she is and states that she is 'just honest' which is not the same impact that is represented in the main image.

The bi-line below the headline gives extra detail on the interview, it gives the reader an insight on the main text. Although the typography is a lot smaller than the title, it still entices the audience to read on even more. 'Lily Allen' has been highlighted in the colour red to denote who the article is about.

The actual main body text is a very small font size, however the format of the layout is simple and easy for the audience to understand. The columns also add to the simplicity.

The main colours used are black, white and red. This provides the layout to be uncomplicated, as the colours contrast with eachother making it easier to attract the readers attention, as it is eye-catching. For example, the black is put on top of the white so that it stands out, and the same with the use of the red.

The double page spread features the usual codes and conventions of a magazine, such as the headline, bi-line, main image.

final pieces; front cover and contents

The only changes I made from my original flat plan, for my front cover, is that is changed the puffs to be situated on the left third of the cover. I created a little banner to show the name of the school. and also used a tilted banner, to suggest importance of a puff. The only changes I made on my contents page is the use of the sponsorship logo as I felt the page looked a little blank.
